Mats4Haiti is a Connecting with Community Awards Finalist

Volunteers here in West Michigan are helping people on a global level.

Mats4Haiti is a volunteer organization that teaches people how to crochet plastic grocery bags into mats that can be used in poverty stricken countries like Haiti.

The Volunteers at Mats4Haiti distribute the mats across the globe through partnering organizations like Rays of Hope International.

The re-purposed mats are used at people’s homes, in medical services and even as padding for the shipments to Haiti.

Grocery bags like the ones used to make the mats can take 37 years to decompose in a landfill.

Volunteers gather in locations like the Wolverine World Wide Family YMCA and the Kent District Library branches.
