GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Grand Rapids Griffins Wednesday lost Game 3 of their series in the first round of the AHL playoffs.
The Abbotsford Heat beat the Griffins 2-1 Wednesday night at Van Andel Arena in downtown Grand Rapids.
Grand Rapids led the series 2 games to 1 going into Wednesday night’s game. Game 4 is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday.
The Griffins, working to defend their Calder Cup Championship, got a little help from the Detroit Red Wings Wednesday. Tomas Jurco, Xavier Ouellet, Jake Paterson and Riley Sheahan returned to Van Andel Arena to help the team after the Wings were eliminated early from the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs.
“I’m really looking forward to helping the team win and defending the Calder Cup,” Sheahan said before the game.
The Griffins’ Mitch Callahan also returned to the ice. He had been benched since early April since he was hit in the face with a puck, breaking his jaw and knocking out 10 of his teeth.
About 7,000 people were expected at Van Andel Arena Wednesday, making it the Griffins’ largest first-round playoff crowd in about 13 years.
