Driver with baby arrested, drugs in diaper bag

PAW PAW TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) – A broken brake light led Van Buren County sheriff’s deputies to the arrest of two people who were allegedly driving under the influence of drugs – one of whom had a baby in their vehicle.

It happened around 3:30 p.m. Thursday on 52nd Avenue west of CR 665 in Paw Paw Township, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office.

A deputy pulled over a minivan with a broken brake light, and noticed the 33-year-old male driver smelled like marijuana and appeared to be on drugs, the sheriff’s office said.

When the deputy searched the minivan, he noticed that the man had a 10-month-old baby with him, and also found drugs in a container of infant formula in the baby’s diaper bag – including 58 grams of marijuana and 4.5 grams of Wax, which is a highly concentrated form of cannabis that produces a high level of intoxication, according to a release from the sheriff’s office.

While at the scene, a 35-year-old woman who showed up to pick up the baby also appeared to be on drugs, the sheriff’s office said. She was arrested for operating under the influence of drugs and was taken to the Van Buren County Jail.

The man, who was already on probation for operating under the influence of drugs, was arrested on the offense again, and is also facing charges of child endangerment and possession of marijuana.

He is also being held at the Van Buren County Jail.

Detective Lt. Brian Stump tells 24 Hour News 8 this is the first time the Van Buren Sheriff’s Department has seen the product. Authorities were able to identify WAX because one of the suspects was “somewhat cooperative”.

A DEA agent in Grand Rapids told 24 Hour News 8 their agency has been aware of the product for a couple of years and says that this is the first time he has heard of it in West Michigan.

The product is manufactured by using a solvent, most commonly butane, to extract the THC, the active ingredient in marijuana.

THE DEA says WAX is extremely potent. Typical marijuana, for instance, typically contains 6 – 20% THC while WAX can have anywhere from 80 – 99.5 % THC. WAX is also known as ‘budder’ (the spelling is meant to say bud but more ) and ‘honey oil’.
