HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) – A man sleeping in a Dumpster narrowly missed being crushed after he was dumped into a garbage truck Friday morning.
The 46-year-old man from Muskegon got into the Dumpster at the Parkview Apartments Thursday night around 9 p.m. to stay out of the weather, police said. He woke up when the Dumpster was emptied into the garbage truck.
After the man had been dumped into the truck, the driver, not knowing a person was inside, compacted a load of trash, police said. However, the man was able to maneuver his body over the compactor so that he was not crushed.
After the truck picked up another Dumpster in the 100 block of E. 11th Street, the driver heard banging and yelling coming from inside the truck around 7:15 a.m., police said.
Officers, firefighters and emergency responders were called to the scene, and firefighters used ladders to reach the man in order to lift him out of the truck.
The man was taken to Holland Hospital for treatment. Holland police said he suffered a broken collarbone, broken ribs and a broken tooth — injuries he most likely sustained when the Dumpster was emptied into the garbage truck.
