Man dies after robbery, shootout with cops

NILES, Mich. (WOOD) – A 39-year-old Elkhart, IN man is dead after a shootout with cops who were responding to a robbery at a Niles restaurant late Friday night.

The incident happened shortly after 11 p.m. at the Long John Silvers restaurant located on 11th Street. Police received a tip that a person was trying to rob the restaurant.

Officers with Niles Police, Michigan State Police, and Berrien County Sheriff’s Department went out to the scene. Some of the officers went to the back of the business and three officers entered the restaurant through the front door.

Officers in the restaurant found the suspect near the back of the restaurant with a handgun. The suspect tried to exit the restaurant through the back door, but saw officers positioned there and opened fire. Niles Police officers and Michigan State Police troopers fired their weapons and struck the suspect.

The suspect was taken to the hospital, but died after arriving at the hospital.

According to WNDU-TV, Four people were inside the restaurant at the time of the incident, but none of them suffered any injuries.

The suspect’s handgun and money from the business were recovered at the scene.

The suspect was identified as 39-year-old Eddie Macon Jr. from Elkhart, Indiana.
