GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A driver caused a crash when she tried to beat a train, authorities say, after which her car was hit by the train.
It happened around 5:10 p.m. at 11th Street NW at Seward Street NW in Grand Rapids. Police say the driver of a white car thought she could make it past the train crossing before a train came through, so she failed to obey a stop sign.
Her car collided with a maroon vehicle. The white car spun, part of it coming to a stop on the train tracks.
A train then hit the car. Authorities say the train was moving slowly.
The driver, a woman in her 60s, was not in the car when it was hit. No one was hurt.
As authorities were working to clear the scene, the train was stopped on the tracks. That caused a traffic backup on Leonard Street NW. After a few hours, Grand Rapids police were able to clear the scene and the train was moved so traffic could clear.
