A race for athletes of all abilities

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) The Fifth Third River Bank Run is Saturday, May 10, in Grand Rapids. It’s a day thousands of people have been preparing for, for months. People from every walk of life will test their strength and their determination. For some athletes, preparing for this incredible event has been a very long journey, whether it be from serious accident, injury, or illness.

Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital has sponsored the wheelchair division of the Fifth Third River Bank Run for 25 years. The guild has given more than $450,000 toward race prize payouts, travel stipends, hotel stipends, and activities and events throughout the year.

Mary Free Bed also has a Wheelchair and Adaptive Sports program, which services 700 athletes who are on competitive teams and attend recreational clinics. They are developing programs for other athletes, such as goalball for the visually impaired. The program collaborates with other organizations in the community to broaden the options for athletes with disabilities.
