MIDDLEVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) — An 11-year-old girl who decided to forego presents for her birthday to instead send a care package to troops in Afghanistan got a big surprise Wednesday morning.

Allie Wilbur, a fifth-grade student at Page Elementary School in Middleville, was honored at a special ceremony at her school for her act of kindness.

The care package that Allie put together went to her uncle, E01 Jeffrey Wilbur, and his fellow troops while they served overseas.

Wednesday, Wilbur, just back from his third tour, gave his niece an honorary flag flown during a combat mission in Afghanistan.

Wilbur said it was an honor to present Allie with the flag.

“Especially for something that she did so [generously] for us, it’s a small token that I could pay back,” he said.

Allie said she already has plans for her next birthday, and wants to raise money for childhood cancer research.
