FRUITPORT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) – One person was killed in a two-car crash in Fruitport Township Thursday afternoon.

The wreck involving a van and a sedan happened on S. Dangl Road just after 1:30 p.m. between Ellis and E. Hile roads, according to the Fruitport Township Police Department.

The driver of a 1999 Ford Contour headed north on S. Dangl lost control, a preliminary investigation found. His vehicle crossed the centerline and collided with a southbound Chrysler Town and Country minivan. Both vehicles sustained “extensive damage,” police said.

The 62-year-old Muskegon Township woman driving the minivan and her passenger, her 85-year-old mother, were taken to Mercy Health Muskegon Hackley Campus with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the car, 27-year-old Dennis David-James Oakley of Fruitport Township, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

A stretch of S. Dangl Road was shut down for a time as Fruitport Township and Michigan State Police investigated.

Police were asking the parents of any children who live in the area to contact their children’s school about transportation, as buses would not be able to get down the road.
