KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A Kalamazoo police officer shot and killed a dog after being bitten Thursday evening.

It happened around 6:50 p.m. when the officer was investigating an assault complaint in the 1600 block of Lay Boulevard, according to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.

When he approached a house to speak to someone involved in the complaint, a dog described by KDPS as a pit bull came out of the house’s front door and “charged” the officer. The officer tried to retreat, but the dog kept coming, KDPS says.

The dog then bit the officer on the leg, according to KDPS. The officer fired three shots at the dog, killing it.

The officer was treated at Bronson Methodist Hospital and released Thursday evening.

KDPS will conduct an internal investigation, it says.
