GR parks & rec director bows out

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — One month after a California man was hired for the job, the City of Grand Rapids is once again searching for director for its parks and recreation department.

Creighton Wright has told city officials he’s decided not to take the job — which he was supposed to start in July — citing personal reasons for the decision, according to a release from the city.

The news is a setback for the city. Budget cuts left the position vacant and canceled most parks and rec programs for several years.

The approval last fall of a dedicated millage for the parks and rec department is expected to bring new life to the system.

The city has reopened the search for a new director, and hopes to have someone in place by the fall, Grand Rapids City Manager Greg Sundstrom said in the release.
