Suspect escapes police after high-speed chase

STURGIS, Mich. (WOOD) – Police know the identity of the driver of a stolen vehicle who escaped on foot after leading authorities on a high-speed chase near Sturgis Thursday.

Sturgis Police located a stolen vehicle out of Colon around 1 a.m. Police tried to make a traffic stop, but the driver fled eastbound on U.S. 12 towards Branch County at a high rate of speed. St. Joesph County Sheriffs Deputies joined in the chase at the intersection of U.S. 12 and Halfway Road, according to a release.

The driver ditched the car in Burr Oak, northeast of Sturgis, and the car crashed into a mailbox and tree, said authorities.

Sturgis Police and St. Joseph County Deputies were chasing the driver on foot, but the suspect was able to get away.Then Michigan State Police brought in a K-9 team to help track down the suspect, but authorities were still unable to find the suspect.

Police know who the suspect is, and he or she will be facing charges of fleeing and eluding as well as resisting and obstructing police, according to the release.
