OLIVE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD)– Authorities in Ottawa County are investigating a deadly industrial accident.

It happened just before 2 a.m. at Hillshire Farms’ Bil Mar Plant on 96th Avenue near Borculo.

Officials said a 49-year-old Grand Rapids man was trapped in a conveyor belt, and had to be freed by Olive Township Fire and Rescue workers.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hillshire Brands released a statement to 24 Hour News 8 saying “We are deeply saddened by the loss of an employee at our Zeeland, Michigan, plant. We are currently conducting an thorough investigation and are working with the local authorities. We have not publicly named the employee out of respect for the family.”

A Hillshire Brands spokesperson said the Bil Mar plant has produced Jimmy Dean products and employs about 950 people at the plant. Chicago-based Hillshire Brands, formerly the Sara Lee Corporation, acquired the plant in 1987 from the DeWitt family of Holland.
