Man wakes to escape burning home

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A man who was sleeping in the upstairs unit of a two-story home was able to escape after the home caught fire.

Shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday, firefighters were called to a multi-family home at the corner of Hall Street and Caulfield Avenue in southwest Grand Rapids.

Everyone was able to make it out of the home safely. The man who was sleeping before he escaped was taken to the hospital to be checked out, but fire crews on scene told 24 Hour News 8 he was doing fine.

Most of the damage was limited to the second floor of the home.

The cause of the fire is not yet known. A fire investigator will be brought in to help determine what caused the fire to start.

The Red Cross was brought in to help the family that was displaced.
