This week is the last of our eight Connecting with Community Award finalists. It’s a special collaboration that offers a job to someone who is homeless, helps fullfill a need and can change someone’s life.
Dégagé Ministries is part of a unique partnership all started with one idea.
A few years ago during the economic downturn Mike Bruggink came across hard times. He didn’t let it get him down. Instead he started volunteering at places like Dégagé Ministries and environmental conservations.
During this time he noticed how much needed to be done at places like Blandford Nature Center. He also realized how many resources their could be from the patrons at Dégagé. With this idea the idea of the unique collaboration was born.
Mike helped connect patrons from Dégagé to First United Methodist Church’s work program. This work program pays people from Grand Rapids’ Heartside District to work at local agencies.
Many of the agencies can not afford to pay for extra help, but First United Methodist is able to raise these funds through donations at the church.
Because of Mike’s idea First United Methodist was able to extend the program to Dégagé patrons and Blandford Nature Center.
Next week, we’ll share the winner of the Connecting with Community Awards. You can watch all the finalist’s stories here.
