Protect your assets by keeping them out of court

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) Figuring out how to protect your assets in case of death or disability can be a complicated process. David L. Carrier helps break down the issue of probate court.

If you own everything in your own name and something happens to you, Probate court will sort out your assets. But along with that comes attorney fees and other costs. Also, when your assets go through Probate, the government will take those assets for Estate Recovery. That’s the process of seizing assets to repay taxpayers who fund Medicare, Medicaid, and long term care.

To avoid losing your assets, David Carrier says it’s best to put them all in a trust. That protects them so they stay in the trust and the next successor trustee will take over. Having a will does not avoid Probate court.
