Minivan wrecks, man airlifted to hospital

PIERSON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) – A Sand Lake man had to be airlifted to the hospital after the minivan in which he was riding crashed Wednesday afternoon in Montcalm County.

The wreck happened around 2:20 p.m. on Waterwheel Road east of West County Line Road in Pierson Township, which is north of Sand Lake, according to the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said a Dodge Caravan was headed west on Waterwheel Road when the driver lost control, causing the minivan to run off the road and hit a tree.

The 19-year-old driver, a man from Sand Lake, wasn’t hurt in the crash.

His 20-year-old passenger was flown to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids for treatment, the sheriff’s office said. His condition is unknown.

The driver was cited for speeding in the incident, according to the sheriff’s office. Alcohol wasn’t believed to be a factor.
