Griffins lose to Stars; out of playoffs

CEDAR PARK, Texas (WOOD) — The Grand Rapids Griffins fell to the Texas Stars Sunday night, losing their second-round playoff series and ending their bid for a second Calder Cup.

The Griffins lost 7-1.

Though the Griffins scored first less than a minute into the game, according to their game day Twitter account, the Stars took an early lead. The first period ended 3-1 in favor of Texas.

The Stars scored early in the second period, too, after which Griffins goalie Petr Mrazek was swapped out for Tom McCollum. It marked McCollum’s first playoff appearance for Grand Rapids, according to the Griffins.

The Stars scored yet again about two minutes into the third period and kept netting the puck. By the time it was over, they had 7 points to the Griffins’ 1.

The Griffins lost Games 1 and 2 in Texas, won 3 and 4 in Grand Rapids, and then lost Game 5 Friday night at Van Andel Arena, sending the series back to the Stars’ home ice in Cedar Park.

The loss in Game 6 means the Griffins, who won the Calder Cup last season, have been eliminated from the playoffs.
