Man dead after tree falls on him

ALGOMA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A 63-year-old retired man was killed while cutting down a dead tree near his Algoma Township home Sunday.

Rescue crews were called to the 13000 block of Foxwood Drive, just off of Indian Lakes Rd. NE, in Algoma Township around noon after the tree fell on top of James Overzet, trapping him.

“His wife went out to check on him. She found him trapped under the tree and by the time she found him he was deceased,” said Kent County Sheriff’s Sgt. Roger Zoppa.

Emergency responders attempted CPR, but were not able to resuscitate Overzet.

Overzet had only been outside for a few minutes before his wife found him.

Detectives were called in to process the scene behind the home in a wooded area.
