GRPD: Victim, citizens detain shooting suspects

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Party-goers stepped in to help detain two suspects after one person was shot in an attempted robbery in Grand Rapids Monday evening, police say.

It happened around 8 p.m. outside a residence in the 500 block of Dickinson Street SE, near College Avenue. Several people were there for a birthday party, the resident of the house involved told 24 Hour News 8.

A man was standing on the front porch when he was approached by two suspects — one of whom was armed with a handgun — who attempted to rob him, police on the scene said.

There was a scuffle and three shots were fired. The victim was struck in the upper back.

Party-goers came to help stop the suspects from getting away. The victim and the victim’s cousin held the suspects on the ground, the party host said. Another party-goer put her foot on the gun.

Officers soon arrived and arrested both suspects.

The victim was taken to the hospital. His condition was not immediately known, but police said his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Police have not said what the suspects were attempting to steal. Charges are pending.
