HESPERIA, Mich. (WOOD) — A Hesperia teacher whose removal as wrestling coach split the community is now on paid administrative leave and under investigation by the Newaygo County Sheriff’s Office.
The district confirmed Doug Baird has been placed on paid administrative leave.
The leave is connected to an April 24 incident involving a student, the district said, but Superintendent Jeff Haase would not say what that incident was.
However, MLive is reporting Baird is under investigation for allegedly grabbing a student by the sweatshirt and pulling them, causing some sort of abrasion.
Haase told 24 Hour News 8 the student’s parents contacted the sheriff’s office. The district is conducting its own investigation and waiting for the sheriff’s department to finish its investigation before determining what will happen regarding Baird.
Baird was removed as wrestling coach last year after two incidents involving the supervision of students. The decision led to a split in the community and some recall efforts against some members of the school board.
