How to get started on scrapbooking

ZEELAND, Mich. (WOOD) There are lots of ways to preserve memories and a very popular one is scrapbooking. It can be overwhelming to figure out where to start. Cynthia Hagedorn from Square Peg events can show you the inspiration to begin. She has been teaching art for more than 20 years to students of all ages.

Cynthia is leading a series of summer camps for anyone six or older. They are on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Morning and afternoon sessions are available. The sessions cost between $65 and $77, which includes all supplies and materials. They take place at Cynthia Hagedorn’s Fine Art Studio located in the Innocademy Homestead in Zeeland.

Masks around the World
We will discover and duplicate masks from around the globe like mud masks from Papua, New Guinea, and a Baule sun mask from the Ivory Coast.  We will learn the historical value in these masks as we create a Hopi Kachina mask, an ancient gold mask from Colombia and then duplicate the mask found on the face of Tutankhamun’s Mummy!  Messy, historical and cool.  What could be better?

The Ancient World:  Egyptian Art
The Egyptian civilization that developed nearly 5,000 years ago will be at our studio door!  Have fun while creating a Lotus tile, golden jewelry, paper and more…  We will be making an Egyptian board game (Mehen Board) and eating cake (recipe from the day).  We promise to make the Canopic jars first!  (The jar used to put their guts in when they died!  Eeeewe!)

Ahoy Mateys!  Pirate Camp
We will create…shiver me timbers…gold coins!  Then we will paint up a treasure chest for keepers…and bury it.  We will also play capture the flag.  Arrrgh!  If that isn’t enough, we will also transform into great shipmates with armor, weapons, and silly goodness.  We will prepare with face paint and create a bandana.  Are you ready to search for adventure on the high seas?

Dates:  July 29, 30, 31
Time:  9 a.m. – Noon

Fairies and Their Wonderland
Come explore the sweet world of fairies and their lives.  In this camp, you will create your very own fairy family.  We will also create the world in which they dwell.  As you go through the stages of the camp checking off the line up…you will become a fairy yourself!  (Are you up for the challenge?)

Dates:  July 29, 30, 31

Exploration ART Station
Imagine… Create… EXPLORE ART!  This session will be an exploration of the studio.  Kids will be able to create with paints, clay, paper, and mixed media.  This session will be an “open-ended” session for kids to work on whatever they like to do best.  We will learn a bit about history, some new cultural art, but mostly, we will learn about art discovery.
