PLAINFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) – Police have identified the driver who may have been dead in his car for hours before he was found following a crash in Plainfield Township.
The Kent County Sheriff’s Department identified the man as 60-year-old William Roy Hayes of Rockford.
Around 4:45 a.m. Wednesday, a driver called police after finding Hayes’ car – a 1998 Chevy Lumina — on Jericho Avenue NE near the Rogue River in Plainfield Township, south of Rockford, sheriff’s officials said. The car had hit a tree and had heavy front-end damage.
It was unclear when the crash happened, and there were no skid marks on the road and no one witnessed the wreck, sheriff’s officials said. Investigators are trying to determine if Hayes suffered a medical condition before the crash.
Jericho Avenue was closed for several hours as deputies investigated the crash.
The crash is still under investigation.
