LaFayette Fire

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD)– A family is without a home after a fire causes extensive damage.

Flames broke out around 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning. The house is located on the 1000 block of LaFayette Avenue Southeast.

Officials with the Grand Rapids Fire Department told our crew at the scene that the house was a rental property and that three adults and two children were living in the lower level of the home. The second floor was vacant.

Authorities say a small fire started in the front wall of the house and spread. The house did have smoke detectors and they were going off but the family says that they didn’t hear them. All five residents did make it out of the house safely.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
