STURGIS, Mich. (WOOD) – Family members of murdered mom Venus Stewart held a domestic violence awareness event in downtown Sturgis Sunday.

There was a history of domestic violence between Venus and her husband Doug Stewart before she disappeared from in front of her parents’ home in 2010. He was convicted of her murder in 2012, her body has never been found.

The Venus Foundation, a 501c3 non profit charitable organization, put on the event.

Several large black and white pictures of domestic violence survivors were displayed on Main Street Sturgis Sunday afternoon.

The survivors depicted were both children and adults.

The Venus Foundation, created in honor of Venus Stewart, has a goal of bringing the issue of domestic violence out in the open.

Charitable donations are used to educate on the issue of domestic violence. The charity hopes to eventually create “safe havens” for domestic violence victims.

Venus Stewart’s family and friends have never stopped searching for her body.
