BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office said a third-party investigation is underway after a jail inmate attempted suicide.

Richard Willavize, 64, was found hanging in his cell around 3:40 p.m. Sunday as corrections officers were conducting a routine check, according to a release from the sheriff’s department. Officers started CPR and called 911.

Willavize was taken to the hospital, where he was still in critical condition Tuesday, the sheriff’s office said.

The Michigan Sheriff’s Association Mission Team will investigate the incident.

“Although the preliminary investigations shows that the corrections staff responded quickly, and were within policy, the Sheriff has taken a proactive stance by requesting that an outside agency conduct an independent investigation,” the sheriff’s office release said.

Last week, Willavize was convicted of unlawful imprisonment, assault and weapons offenses. He was set to be sentenced in June.
