GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A man has been convicted of raping and assaulting an elderly woman in her Grand Rapids home.

Shane Chambers was found guilty of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, first-degree home invasion and assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder — all the charges against him.

After deliberating for about 3.5 hours, jurors handed down their verdict around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The assault happened in September 2013 at the victim’s home on Grand Rapids’ southeast side. A 77-year-old woman said she woke up in the middle of the night to Chambers beating her. Police said Chambers left the woman unconscious and then robbed her.

Chambers, 31, was later arrested after being found with the victim’s credit card.

Sentencing is set for July 2. Chambers faces up to life in prison.
