Sheriff’s Dept.: Women may have tried con

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) – The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office is looking into what appears to be a case of attempted fraud in Grand Haven Township.

A woman was leaving the Meijer located in the 15000 block of US-31 around 10 a.m. Tuesday when she was approached by two middle-aged women who claimed they had found a wallet near her car. They asked if it belonged to the woman, who told them it did not.

One of the suspects said the wallet had a large amount of money inside, and they should go to Walmart to talk to her boss, who was an attorney, about whether they could keep it.

The suspects told the intended victim to follow them to the nearby Walmart, where she waited in the parking lot while the women went inside.

When the suspects returned to the intended target, they told her their boss said they could split the money if nobody claimed it. They asked the intended victim if she had access to money, saying they needed $50 bills to record the serial numbers.

The intended victim went to her bank and withdrew money, but did not return to the suspects.

The suspects were in their 40s or 50s, and one of them walked with a cane.
