Warsen, a Navy SEAL, was killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan in August 2012. Shanafelt was injured in Afghanistan and died at Walter Reed Hospital in November 2012.

“The biggest comment I get from gold star moms is thank you for not letting them forget their sons,” Michael Burri of the Kent County United Veterans Council said. “That’s the important thing. It becomes our duty to honor these men and women who were lost.”

Warsen and Shanafelt’s names will be dedicated publicly Friday during a ceremony following the city’s Memorial Day parade.

The parade will start at 7:30 p.m. and run down Division Avenue to Fulton Street, ending at Veterans Memorial Park.
