A fire on Lafayette Avenue NE near Fulton Street. (June 2, 2014)

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Firefighters quickly put out an apartment fire in Grand Rapids’ Heritage Hill neighborhood Monday night.

They were called to a house that had been converted into eight apartments the 50 block of Lafayette NE just north of Fulton Street shortly after 10 p.m. It took them less than 10 minutes to knock down the fire.

Firefighters on the scene said the fire broke out in a first-floor unit. Residents told 24 Hour News 8 that firefighters said the flames broke out in the kitchen and may have had something to do with the refrigerator.

The person who lives in that apartment was not home at the time of the fire. A fire investigator will investigate because the resident had not been home for a few days.

No injuries have been reported.

Lafayette was closed between Fulton and Fountain Street as crews cleaned up.
