BERRIEN SPRINGS, Mich. (WOOD) — Crews found the body of a 17-year-old who went under the water while swimming in Lake Chapin Monday.

Around 6:30 p.m. Monday, emergency responders were called to the northwest side of Lake Chapin near S. Main Street after a report of two struggling swimmers, according to the Berrien Springs-Oronoko Township Police Department.

Just before crews arrived, one of the swimmers made it out of the lake. The other went under the water and has not been seen since.

Crews started looking for the missing 17-year-old male swimmer.

It took a fire department boat only about 15 minutes to make it to the scene to aid in the search, police said. Buchanan Township also sent a boat to help. The Berrien County Marine Division and Dive Team was also called.

The other swimmer, also 17, was checked out and found to be fine.

Despite their effort, the 17-year-old was not found Monday night and the search had to be stopped when it became dark. It continued Tuesday morning and the body was found late in the morning, WNDU-TV reports.
