Man sentenced to life in toddler’s death

Toren Hains. (October 2013)

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) – A man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his girlfriend’s toddler in Kalamazoo County.

Toren Hains was sentenced Monday in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court, and also received 10 to 30 years in prison on a first-degree child abuse conviction.

A jury convicted Hains on the charges in early May.

The conviction stems from the December 2012 death of Hains’ girlfriend’s 14-month-old daughter. The toddler was found unresponsive at an apartment in Oshtemo Township, and died the next day at the hospital.

Hains wasn’t charged in the murder until the girl’s autopsy was completed in October 2013.
