GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) – Three people made it out of their home safely after a fire started on the deck and spread to the house.

The Grand Rapids Fire Department responded to the call of a house fire in the 1700 block of Ranch Drive NW just after 3 a.m. Monday.

Firefighters believe the fire started on the back deck, spread to the garage, and eventually made it to the house, causing severe damage to the home.

Neighbors told 24 News 8 they heard explosions that most likely came from propane tanks the victims had in the garage.

The neighbors confirmed that the homeowners were grilling on the deck last night where the fire started.

The homeowner, his son, and his son’s wife evacuated the home after smoke detectors alerted them to the fire.

One of the firefighters on scene was treated for heat exhaustion, but is OK.

Fire officials were investigating the cause of the fire, which isn’t believed to be suspicious.
