GR Griffins’ Blashill signs 3-year deal

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids Griffins Head Coach Jeff Blashill Wednesday signed a three-year contract to remain in the Detroit Red Wings organization.

In Blashill’s first season with the Griffins in 2012-2013, he led the team to a Calder Cup. This year, the Griffins made it into the second round of the playoffs.

Also this season, Blashill was named the American Hockey League’s coach of the year.

And the 40-year-old Sault Ste. Marie native has helped prepare players for the big leagues in Detroit.

Blashill’s name has come up as a possible candidate for a couple of NHL openings, but the Wings have not allowed other teams to speak with him.

With Wings Head Coach Mike Babcock heading into the final year of his deal in Detroit, Blashill is believed to be the next in line for the job.
