KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A former karate instructor accused of sexually assaulting three of his teen students has died after apparently committing suicide.

First responders were called out to a home in the 500 block of Nazareth Road near Kalamazoo on a report of an unresponsive man around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Upon arrival, they found the body of 61-year-old Robert Earle Keith.

The police investigation up to this point suggests Keith took a poisonous substance. He was declared dead by a physician following unsuccessful efforts to resuscitate him.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing.

Keith was accused of manipulating kids under the guise of being a karate instructor. Police said he assaulted three young teen boys at his home and Karate Dojo on Nazareth Road.

Keith was expected to go to trial on June 10 on several counts of alleged criminal sexual conduct.
