GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A filmmaker and the family of a young man murdered 24 years ago are hoping a documentary about the cold case gets results.
It’s a case 24 Hour News 8 has been covering since it happened on June 11, 1990.
The film will premiere at the Wealthy Theater in Grand Rapids on Wednesday, which is the anniversary of Joel Battaglia’s murder.
Battaglia was a 23-year-old college who was beaten to death and robbed on June 11, 1990 in Grand Rapids. He was last seen a bar ten blocks away.
“This was a young man who was emotionally invested in the community, but even more in his family and it was that engagement that I think I responded to,” said David Schock, who created the documentary.
Schock has made other films about cold cases in West Michigan, including the Janet Chandler case.
“I’m entertaining a couple hundred people, maybe a couple thousand people, but I’m really reaching out for that one person who can tell the police what they need to hear,” said Schock.
