SPARTA, Mich. (WOOD) — A man was arrested shortly after a Sparta gas station was robbed at knifepoint Monday evening, police say.

The armed robbery happened around 8:40 p.m. at the American Gas & Oil Company in the 500 block of E. Division/13 Mile Road in Sparta, according to the Sparta Police Department.

A man entered the gas station convenience store, got a drink from a cooler, went to the counter and paid the clerk. When she opened the cash register, he pulled a knife and told her to give him money. He then reached across the counter, grabbed all the cash from the drawer and took off.

A witness told police the man crossed the street and got into a dark-colored minivan. The van then headed west on E. Division.

A Kent County sheriff’s deputy soon spotted the minivan headed south on M-37 near 10 Mile Road and followed it until backup arrived.

The van was pulled over, evidence from the robbery was found and the suspect was arrested, Sparta police said.

He was expected to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon.
