ALLEGAN, Mich. (AP) — A man who repeatedly insisted he was innocent is now admitting that he fatally shot Allegan County farmer Phil Timmerman nearly two decades ago.

Scott Wynne was convicted of murder in 1995 and sentenced to life in prison. He filed numerous appeals and even convinced a federal judge to order a new trial, a decision reversed by a higher court.

Wynne confessed in a letter to the victim’s family and in a recorded interview with police, Allegan County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Frank Baker confirmed to 24 Hour News 8.

Wynne says he was angry that Timmerman had leased Wynne family farmland that Wynne considered his. He says he confronted Timmerman in a cornfield and shot him with an assault rifle and a handgun.

Wynne says he came clean as a way to apologize.
