GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A driver who sped up to beat an upcoming lane closure caused a crash which closed down eastbound I-96 Saturday.
The accident happened around 6 p.m. when a woman driving a Saturn noticed construction signs indicating the right lane would be closed soon, sped up to beat traffic, then slammed on the brakes and lost control of her car.
The driver of the Saturn slammed into the back of a Jeep with a female driver and male passenger.
The male passenger had to be extracted from the car and was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The female driver of the Jeep was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
