BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — Firefighters battled a blaze Monday night at a Battle Creek senior citizen apartment complex.
The fire broke out at Lakeview Meadows, located at 890 Territorial Road near S. La Vista Boulevard. The first 911 call of smoke coming from the building came in around 8:50 p.m., dispatchers said. Battle Creek Fire Chief Dave Schmaltz said it took only four minutes for a fire department vehicle to arrive on the scene.
Flames appeared to have spread to the attic and then across the building, Schmaltz said, before firefighters cut it off near the south end of the building. A 24 Hour News 8 crew said smoke could still be seen from as far away as two miles just before 10:30 p.m.
At 11 p.m., the chief said crews were expected to remain on scene for hours.
Everyone at the facility was evacuated, had been accounted for and was OK, Schmaltz said.
The Red Cross, VA and ambulance services worked to relocate residents, according to Schmaltz, and they were taken to the nearby Lakeview Baptist Church on the corner of Territorial and 20th Street. Oxygen was brought into those who needed it.
Schmaltz said Monday night the cause of the fire had not yet been determined, but dispatchers said initial reports indicated it may have started on a balcony of one of the apartments.
Lakeview Meadows, a independent living facility, has apartments to rent and own.
