Handling multiple generations in the workplace

Smiling businesspeople

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) There are some interesting trends happening in the workplace. For the first time in history, some employers have four or even five generations under one roof. Janis Petrini, owner of Express Employment Professionals and WOTV 4 Women crew member, says managers need to recognize the trend and learn how to help their teams function at their best.

Seventy-two percent of companies surveyed say intergenerational conflict is one of their biggest problems. Managers need to know the unique characteristics of each generation and provide education to better collaborate and use the strengths of each generation to create strong engagement. Communication styles vary greatly between generations and different management styles are needed for each generation.

Express Employment Professionals provides job placement and human resources consulting. They are located at 333 44th Street SW in Grand Rapids.
