Two teens shot in downtown Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD)– Two teenagers were shot on Ionia Avenue near J. Gardella’s Tavern and Buffalo Wild Wings in downtown Grand Rapids early Wednesday morning.

Police told 24 Hour News 8 the victims are both males, ages 16 and 17 years old.

Investigators said they’re working to learn what led up to the shooting. They said they don’t believe it was a random act.

The 16-year-old is in critical condition after being shot in the back, and the 17-year-old is in serious condition, according to GRPD.

The teens were shot just after midnight, and police were forced to block off a portion of Ionia Avenue to complete their investigation.

A witness who lives in an apartment above one of the bars in the area told 24 Hour News 8 it was a chaotic scene in downtown.

“I heard two bang bangs and looked out the window and there was somebody on the ground bleeding which is obviously very startling when you live on a street like Ionia,” the witness said.

The two teens were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Police are still working to track down the shooter.

Extra officers will be on patrol in the area this weekend, GRPD said.
