Lightning strike sparks fire, home total loss

Home destroyed by lightning at the corner of 20th Ave and Union Street.

PORTLAND, Mich. (WOOD) – A two-story house caught fire after it was hit by lightning.

The Portland Fire Department arrived at the home on the corner of 20th Avenue and Union Street just before 7 a.m.on Wednesday.

By the time crews arrived the fire had spread rapidly through the house.

Crews put the fire out, but said the house is a total loss.

The homeowner was asleep downstairs when she heard a loud boom above her.

She found smoke and flames coming from an electrical outlet on the second-level and called police.

The woman was the only one home, and she made it out of the house safely.
