BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — A jail inmate who hanged himself in his cell in late May has died, according to the Calhoun County sheriff.

Calhoun County corrections officers found Richard Willavize, 64, hanging in his cell on the afternoon of May 25. They performed CPR and Willavize was taken to the hospital.

Calhoun County Sheriff Matt Saxon told 24 Hour News 8 via email Thursday that Willavize had died at the hospital.

Saxon also said Willavize’s bond was posted and he had been released from the jail’s custody at the time of his death.

Willavize was awaiting sentencing for unlawful imprisonment, assault and weapons charges when he hanged himself.

The Michigan Sheriff’s Association Mission Team was set to investigate the incident. The status of that investigation is unknown.
