Man falls asleep at wheel causing crash

PORTER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Two people were hospitalized after a man reportedly fell asleep at the wheel and hit another vehicle.

Dwight Ottman, 21, of Cassopolis was driving eastbound on US 12 near Suszek Road when authorities say he crossed over the center line and hit an eastbound vehicle driven by Becky Worth, 48, of White Pigeon. The crash happened around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Both vehicles spun out and came to a rest on the north side of the highway between Suszek Road and Old 112.

The drivers of both vehicles were taken to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment. The conditions of the drivers are unknown at this time.

Initial investigation and interviews show that Ottman fell asleep before crossing over the center line.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
