33rd Annual Grand Haven Sand Sculpture Contest

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (WOOD) — The 33rd Annual Grand Haven Sand Sculpture Contest brought hundreds of spectators and supporters to the beach.

The event took place on Saturday, with almost 30 teams participating in five different categories.

The event was sponsored by Chemical Bank, North Ottawa Community Health System, Plante & Moran PLLC, Apparel Sales Company, Culvers, the Grand Haven Tribune and Jan and Art Kinane in Memory of Jim Kinane, according to a release

The categories and winners were:

Child’s categories of one participant under one year old

  •     1st Place: “Turtles” Beach Monkeys

Children’s Category with 2-7 participants under 12 years old

  •     1st Place: Barnes with Kittens

Individual’s Category of 1 participant 12 years or older

  •     1st Place:  Conny Melchi with a sculpture of puppies

Family’s Category of 2-7 participants of all ages

  •     1st Place: Sandformers with a Dragon sculpture

Crew’s Category of 8-15 participants of all ages

  •     1st Place:  Duds & Duddettes with a sculpture titled “Mosquitos Suck”

Honorable Mention:

  •    “Olaf” Melted

The Chemical Bank Award:

  •   “Sea’once” by the Chemical Bank Team

The North Ottawa Community Health System Award:

  •   “Noch A Sketch” by The Schamback Family

People’s Choice:

  • “Mosquitos Suck” by the Dudes and Duddettes

Next year’s contest will take place on June 20.
