GRANDVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) — Police say they have arrested the suspect that robbed and assaulted an elderly woman in her Grandville home.

On Thursday morning, authorities were called out to the 3700 block of Prairie Street SW. Grandville Police said a stranger came to the back door of the victim’s home and tricked her into letting him inside. Shawn James Jarrett 062114

The suspect attacked her and stole an unknown amount of money before taking off on a bicycle.

On Saturday, Grandville Police say thanks to help from Grand Rapids Police Department, the suspect was identified and apprehended after a search warrant was executed by the Special Response Team at a residence in Grand Rapids Friday night.

Kent County Jail and Michigan State Police records indicate 50-year-old Shawn James Jarrett has been arrested in connection to the assault and is currently being housed in the Kent County Jail.

This isn’t the first time he has been involved in brutal attacks on women.

Jarrett plead guilty to murdering his neighbor, 64-year-old Mary Sposito of Farrell, Pennsylvania in March, 1982. He broke into the woman’s home, strangled her to death and raped her, the former District Attorny of Mercer County in Pennsylvania, James Epstein told 24 Hour News 8.

Then two months later he rode his bike into Sharron, north of Farrell, where he went knocking on doors trying to get people to let them into their homes. Eventually, a 58-year-old woman did let him in. He left the home only to come back later, break in and try to strangle her, but her daughter was there to stop the attack. Police were able to arrest him and he plead guilty to assault.

While in jail for assaulting the 58-year-old woman, police charged him with the murder of Sposito and then he plead guilt to 3rd degree murder.

Jarrett served his full 30 year sentence and was released on December 31, 2012 then moved to his parents in Ohio.

“I had been hoping that since he was released in early 2013 and we had heard nothing of him that perhaps he was not going to commit any additional offenses. At some level, I was always concerned that he might,” Epstein

Police say Jarrett will be charged with Home Invasion in the 1st degree and CSC in the 1st degree and will be arraigned in 59th district court Monday.
