Coast Guard rescues hiker from sand dunes

NORTON SHORES, Mich. (WOOD) – The Coast Guard rescued a hiker suffering from severe dehydration from the sand dunes at Hoffmaster State Park Saturday.

A Coast Guard helicopter crew was in the area doing some training when they got a request from Muskegon dispatch to help rescue a hiker in the dunes around 1 p.m. Saturday at the Hoffmaster State Park in Norton Shores, according to a Coast Guard news release.

The hiker was in an area hard for rescuers to get to her, according to a Coast Guard spokesperson.

The Coast Guard helicopter crew was able to hoist the woman from the sand dune using a basket. Then the air crew took the hiker to EMS at Muskegon County Airport, the release.

The hiker is in good health and was taken to the hospital. The Coast Guard is not releasing the name of the woman rescued.
