EB I-96 re-open after deadly wrong-way crash

Crash near Nunica

NUNICA, Mich.(WOOD) — A deadly crash involving a wrong-way driver closed a portion of a highway in Ottawa County Saturday morning.

Dispatchers reported that Eastbound I-96 was shut down at 112th Avenue near Nunica. The highway re-opened just before 7 a.m.

Deputies told 24 Hour News 8 that a man driving a 1999 Pontiac was going the wrong way in the eastbound lanes and hit a 2002 Buick Regal head-on.

The crash happened about a mile west of the Coopersville/68th Street exit. Both drivers were pinned in their vehicles after the crash.

Deputies said the wrong-way driver, 39-year-old Michael Anthony Johnson of Grand Rapids, was killed in the crash.

The other driver, 22-year-old Mitchell David Hamm, was taken to a Grand Rapids hospital. Hamm is listed in critical condition.
