ALLENDALE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — One person was seriously hurt in a crash believed to have been caused after a driver fell asleep at the wheel.

It happened just before 5:30 a.m. Monday on Lake Michigan Drive near 68th Avenue in Allendale Township, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say Patrick Gillespie, 24, of Hastings, was headed east on Lake Michigan Drive when he fell asleep. His 2001 Buick Century went into a grass median and then became airborne.

When it landed, it hit a 2006 Mini Cooper that was stopped in a Michigan Left median turnaround.

The Mini Cooper was driven by 49-year-old Patrick Burrell of Allendale. Burrell was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated. He was hospitalized in serious condition.

Gillespie was not hurt.

Both drivers were wearing their seat belts, the sheriff’s office says.
